Finally, the PhD Pays Off

Literally.

Quick backstory:  When I applied for my current teaching position three years ago, I hadn’t defended my dissertation yet.  So technically I was still a PhD candidate.  Even though I was formally hired three months after I received my PhD, for some reason the HR folks never updated my info, and my contract had me in the pay rate one level below terminal doctorate.

After three years of trying to get my paperwork straightened out, I got an email this week from an HR staff member that the district Board of Trustees (the REAL big bosses) approved my request to be re-classified.  So, three years after my doctoral graduation ceremony, I’m actually going to be paid on the doctoral pay scale, beginning this year.

HOO-YAH!

If single-mothering were a paid job, I'd be rich. However, it doesn't, so I write (which doesn't pay the bills) and teach (which does). I'm overly-educated in the liberal arts, but that doesn't hinder my ability to be pragmatic and realistic. YAY.

Have you floated the idea of a retroactive adjustment? I had one of those a few years ago. It was AWESOME.

    Congratulations!
