So my fellow English department colleague and I were sitting on the lower courtyard stairs, watching volunteers try out the Chinese lion dance outfit after the pro’s did their performance during the International Festival yesterday, when our boss’s boss came by and asked, “Why don’t you two try that out?”
“Are you asking that because we’re Asian?” my colleage asked. She’s Korean; I’m Filipino.
Our boss’s boss, who’s Hispanic, paused with that “deer-in-the-headlights” look in his eyes and a too-wide smile. Then he replied, “There’s no right way to answer that, is there?”
And that’s when she and I laughed to break the awkwardness, and I patted him on his back. “Yup, you’re right.”
