2008 Beijing Olympics

The Hubby and I have been seeing bits and pieces of the Olympics, and these four athletes (so far) have stood out to this spectator:

1) Michael Phelps.  Of course.  As the Hubby said, “He’s a freak of nature!”  Yay, Mutant Swimming Guy!

2) Dara Torres.  41 years old, mom, and Olympic champion  — can you say, “WOW” ?

3) Constantina Tomescu-Dita. 38 years old, mom (of a teenager, no less), and gold medalist marathoner.  Another athlete whose achievements belie the “only teenagers and twenty-somethings are athletes” cliche.

4) Shelly-Ann Fraser. The Hubby and I caught this race just last night.  Absolute newbie to the Olympics. she was just overjoyed that she was *there* at all.  As the Hubby said, “She was smiling at the starting blocks, she was happy and loose, and that’s why she won.”

Even with all the stuff going on in the world, the Olympics is one place where the ideal of a level international playing field exists, to remind everyone what can be possible, if only we’d let it.

About lizardqueen

If single-mothering were a paid job, I'd be rich. However, it doesn't, so I write (which doesn't pay the bills) and teach (which does). I'm overly-educated in the liberal arts, but that doesn't hinder my ability to be pragmatic and realistic. YAY.
