Just finished watching Water, from the Hindi director Deepa Mehta.  Beautiful, melancholy-sweet film, about the battle between traditional, religious customs and new, progressive ways, as seen in the life of widows in 1938 India.

If you’re looking for mind-candy or escapism, this movie ain’t it.

But if you’re looking for a movie that speaks about what’s true in the human spirit — the good and the bad — and isn’t afraid to look at both, especially the bad (and you don’t mind reading subtitles), then this movie’s it.

About lizardqueen

If single-mothering were a paid job, I'd be rich. However, it doesn't, so I write (which doesn't pay the bills) and teach (which does). I'm overly-educated in the liberal arts, but that doesn't hinder my ability to be pragmatic and realistic. YAY.
