After a morning and early afternoon spent in the yet lower levels of Grading Hell, I visited a couple of my former colleagues at the college I used to work at. What gets me — what *really* gets me — is that this previous college is no great shakes. The facilities are ancient, a lot of the higher up administrators (especially those in charge of $$$$) are incompetent, majority of the students are so unprepared for college that they don’t even bother to show up to class (let alone do the work), offices get burgled *often*, etc. etc.
And yet two of my most favorite people in the world — My Favorite Vegetarian and Mel the Humanities Wonk — work at this college and made the whole torture of working at this place *worth it.* And, after visiting with both of ’em for the better part of four hours, yup, they miss me too. They even stayed an hour *over* the end of their workday because I was there, and these are guys with an active homelife to get home to.
The college I currently work at has better facilities, better college administration, better students, and better pay. But those two guys aren’t there, to shoot the crap, to each lunch with, to generally just be with folks that I can be me for a brief moment at time while I’m at work and, as a result, there’s an odd, sterile quality at my current job. Ain’t that just the way life is, sometimes.
Off to bed… one last final exam to proctor tomorrow morning, finish my end-of-semester grading and administrivia, and I will be *free*. La-la-la!
